Hearing from God
Get an in-depth understanding of hearing from God in our "How to Hear from God" Course available in the “Courses” tab.
All people are designed and created to hear God’s voice–that means YOU are too! John 10:2-4 (NLT) says, “But the one who enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep recognize his voice and come to him. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. After he has gathered his own flock, he walks ahead of them, and they follow him because they know his voice.”
As you engage with God, keep it simple. There’s no need to overcomplicate it or overthink it. Hearing from God is as simple as asking and listening. Trust that in this environment you are GOING to hear from Him–God loves to speak to His children. His voice isn’t anything you have to conjure up, and it isn’t based on your performance–you are just receiving.
Part of knowing His voice is recognizing the many different ways in which God communicates with people. In the Bible, we see Him using a lot more than words to reveal Himself! Some of the languages of God include:
- The Bible (the written Word of God)
- Mental pictures that you see in your mind’s eye
- Feelings or impressions
- A still, small voice
- Colors and numbers
- Dreams
- Visions
- Audible voice (hearing with your physical ears)
- Open vision (seeing the supernatural with your physical eyes)
The important thing is that you are open and willing to hear from God in whatever manner He chooses to communicate. Don’t get stuck on assuming any one way is the only way He will talk to you. Just be ready to receive from Him.
A big question everyone has about conversing with God is how to discern God’s voice from other voices. It is helpful to recognize that there are only three voices:
- God
- Your own thoughts
- The enemy
James 4:7 says, “Submit to God, resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” When we set up hearing from God, we submit ourselves to God, resist the devil, and choose to die to our own desires and imaginations (that takes care of both the enemy and our own thoughts, so now the only voice that we are going to listen to is God’s), and wait on the Lord to hear His voice.
The simple model we follow for listening in this app is to:
- Start with an opening prayer, laying down all our burdens and distractions
- Submit to God, resist the devil, and die to our own desires and imaginations
- Ask a specific question of God
- Wait on Him and listen for an answer
- Thank Him and record what He showed us
Remember: hearing from God is as simple as asking and listening.
There are a few things we would like to mention as you explore having conversations with God:
- God will never violate the Scriptures, so if you think you are hearing something that goes against the Bible, it isn’t from God.
- What you hear from God is never meant to add or subtract from the Bible. The Bible has been “Canonized” so there is nothing more to add.
- We are all human and can get it wrong sometimes. It’s important to record and track what you hear over time so you can discern the fruit.
- If you encounter anything that triggers a deeper emotional issue, we recommend you seek out a good Christian counselor to do deep heart work.
- This app is meant to be a tool to help you get into the practice of talking with God, but obviously it is not necessary to use this app to hear from God. You can engage with God anytime and anywhere - and it is not subject to the perfect environment or tool that you may find useful.
- Our goal with this app is to connect you with the source of all truth and life, God himself. It’s not about what we know or the revelation we carry, it is about you being able to connect with God for yourself.
We strongly suggest that you write down what you get from the Lord! Whether it’s a verse or a vision, or an answer to a specific question, these are rhemas from God that you will want to value and treasure.
Keeping notes in a journal or in your phone is a great way to begin to build a history with God, and you will also find it useful as you’re learning to discern exactly how to recognize His voice to you. It seems that we will never forget what He shows us, but time and distance have a way of dulling our memories. So write down your rhemas! You will reference them for years to come.
We would love to hear your stories of what God does in your life through the Rhema NOW app. If you have a testimony about how hearing from God daily is changing your life, please share it with us! Just click on the “Testimony” tab, and fill out the form to send it to us.
Are you ready to try this for yourself? Grab some headphones and head over to the “Prayers” tab to get started. We are excited for you to start having life-changing encounters with God!
